Activities for October
The month of October will present some special opportunities for reinforcing important
skills with your preschooler. There is so much to talk about - weather changes, color changes, holidays and new foods to try!
Here are a few recommended activities that we hope you can get the whole family to try.
Read some books together that specifically talk about the Fall season. Our top picks:
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf, by Lois Ehert
Picking Apples and Pumpkins, by Amy Hutchings
The Lonely Scarecrow, by Margaret Wise Brown
Johnny Appleseed, by Reeve Lindbergh
It's Fall, by Linda Glaser
Reinforce simple Math skills by going on a nature walk and gathering acorns, berries and leaves. Practice sorting and grouping the items by similarity (type, size or color) and then practice counting them!
Art and Fall are a perfect pair! Try one (or both) of the following fun activities to further develop your child's color awareness and creativity.
1)
- Gather leaves outside - talk about the colors and textures and smells as you explore
- Place a leaf underneath a piece of thin white paper - tissue paper works well
- Color gently over the leaf and watch as the distinct pattern of the leaf appears on the paper
- Do this using leaves of various sizes and textures and explore using different colored crayons as well
- Talk about the differences you see
2)
- Gather leaves outside - talk about the colors and textures and smells as you explore
- Cut a half-circle out of the center of a paper plate
- Help your child glue or staple the leaves collected around the edge of the plate (leave the other half-circle in the center uncovered)
- On the remaining half-circle in the center, write "I am thankful for _________"
- Let your child write or draw or tell you what they are thankful for
- Proudly display your completed "Thankful Wreath" in your home!
