Activities for November and Thanksgiving
For many preschoolers, the month of November is often just the start of the countdown to Christmas. With your guidance, however, it can be so much more than that! It is a great time to discuss helping others, being thankful and making good food choices.
Here are some suggestions to help reinforce these topics:
Re-tell the story about the first Thanksgiving. Discuss how new friendships were made and new foods were tried. If applicable to your family's beliefs, talk about how important it is to take time to thank God for the blessings of family, food, clothing, shelter and special friendships.
Establish traditions for Thanksgiving just like you would do for other major holidays.
Make Thanksgiving placemats:
- Look thru old magazines and cut out pictures of things that your children indicate they are thankful for.
- Print some family photos from your computer.
- Glue the pictures on a piece of heavy card stock or construction paper.
- Have your child draw or write on the paper if they desire.
- Create several of these and take them to a local copy or office shop and have them laminated.
- You now have something special to talk about when your guests sit down to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner!
