Black History Month
Although Valentine's Day is the first thing that often comes to mind when
talking about February events, there is another important theme - Black History Month.
There are many fun and interesting ways to celebrate the culture and achievements of African Americans.
Try a few of these:
- Talk about George Washington Carver - the founder of peanut agricultural science. Make homemade peanut butter as you discuss the importance of his contributions in regard to such an important staple food in many children's diets!
- Honor the invention of the traffic light (Garret Augustus Morgan) by playing the game "Red Light, Green Light" and talk about how driving would be without such an important device!
- Read The Story Of Rosa Parks by Patricia Pingry and Steven Walker (Candy Cane Press, 2007). It is a board book which young children can easily follow.
